From his early days with Taste in the late '60s to the mid '70s, Rory Gallagher used Rangemaster Treble Boosters with his Vox AC30 and Fender Tweed amps as they were integral to his sound.

"For years I used a Vox AC30, which is the best all-around European amp I've ever come across. I still have it. The Shadows used to use them, and the Beatles used them, so you know it was the popular amp. But I found that when using the treble booster, that along with the treble boost you got a built-in gain, because the transistors were fairly primitive. If I used the normal input—which was very bassy, as opposed to the brilliant input—I could get that nice rough edge without getting into a very fuzzy sound. I used that for years."

Brian May: "He was one of the very few people of that time who could make his guitar do anything it just seemed to be magic. We hung around and hid when the Marquee was turning-out time and then we kind of strolled over as if we ought to be there and said “Oh, mister Gallagher how do you get the sound?" “Oh it’s very simple. I have this guitar and I have this AC30 Amp which is like nothing else and I have this little treble booster". So I went straight out and got the AC30 and the treble booster...it was Rory that gave me my sound and that’s the sound I still have"

Pictured are two of Rory's original 1965 Dallas Rangemaster Treble Boosters!! One has no tape and it is the one he used on the 74 Irish Tour and the famous Isle of Wight Festival, the other one is taped No. "2" and was most likely his backup!

Of the other 2 known to exist the No.1 was given to Joe Bonamassa by Daniel Gallagher, son of Donal Gallagher, Rory's brother and manager. The other one was purchased at the Bonhams auction by Live Nation Gaiety Ltd, run by Irish concert promoter and multi-millionaire Dennis Desmond. He has donated the Rangemaster to the National Museum of Ireland, together with Rory's 1961 Stratocaster and his VOX AC30!
