The P90s used in these guitars offered an openness and crisp powerful sound that humbuckers could not, and so these less expensive Gibson guitars became increasingly popular with professional musicians all over the music industry.

That said, the Les Paul Special for sale, which is limited to only 25 guitars worldwide!, disproves the assumption that a Junior or Special would always be a stripped-down Les Paul.
