1963 early JMI VOX AC30 Bass 2x12 Red Copper Panel T530 Blue Non Top Boost
There is an interesting story regarding the smooth black vinyl Vox installed on the AC30. Prior to 1962, Vox amps were commonly covered in fawn (tan) vinyl. After the introduction on the Vox Continental Organ in 1962, many customers requested that their Vox amps be covered in the same smooth black vinyl to match the new portable organs. Once the overwhelming customer acceptance of this new and handsome color combination was measured, Vox phased out the fawn vinyl on their amps. This smooth black vinyl was installed on a portion of Vox amps manufactured in 1962 and 1963. Both the fawn and smooth black vinyls were eliminated in late 1963 when Vox changed to a black basket weave pattern vinyl.
The list of AC30 enthusiasts is endless, with a story that began with Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch and Jet Harris of The Shadows (for whom the amplifier was originally developed during early 1960s before Beatlemania!) and quickly grew to include players such as John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison, Brian May, Rory Gallagher, The Edge, Pete Townshend, Mark Knopfler and countless others.
Anyway, this mostly original AC30 sounds spectacular as usual with an incredibly dynamic and touch sensitive responsiveness, smooth tube saturation and glassy clarity that has made this AC30 one of the most sought after amps of all time. This amp delivers both the detailed cleans and midrange rich tube overdrive that are the hallmarks of the AC30 tone, not to mention providing fantastic lush vibrato and tremolo on the third pair of inputs!
It is a rare early 1963 copper panel version with the original VOX JMI Celestion Blue Alnico speakers T530 with the original 18 H1777 pulsonic cones, no corner protectors, round corner back panels, original copper vents, original smooth vinyl covering, original P.E.241/DT choke and OH 083/DT Output Transformer, 99% original board and electronics with WIMA, TCC (with date code "UC" = March 1963) and HUNTS capacitors, original pots, original and super rare JMI round footswitch that predates the VOX "egg" footswitch, VOX branded handles etc etc.
The Power transformer was replaced to change the amp from the somewhat sagging GZ34 tube rectifier into a solid state rectifier to give it more oomph and rock! It also was checked and serviced recently and only 2 or 3 capacitors were replaced where needed.
And there's a nice little extra: this actual amp (serial 7431 B)is mentioned on the VOXac30 website! www DOT voxac30 DOT org DOT uk/vox_ac30_7000s DOT html
